As Christians we often have a lot of expectations put on us. We need to be wise, we need to be loving, we need to be patient, honest, pure, happy, bold. I have often felt overwhelmed by this, have you? There’s a lot we are called to do by God, usually more than we believe ourselves capable of. One of my favorite phrases is “God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called”.
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NIV) – But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.
I have been reminded of this a lot in the past week. I look at my life and I feel like I’m failing on most Christian levels. I feel selfish, I feel lazy, I feel tempted. I see both God’s blessings and discipline in my life, yet I feel as though I’m struggling to learn and be grateful. I feel his comfort and conviction, yet my progress toward him seems to be short lived. Can you relate?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to breathe, like I have. Look at the big picture. You’re here reading this, you’re wrestling through these questions and challenges. That shows you have a desire to know God. Now it’s time we both took it one step forward. Just one step for now. God can use every little thing in amazing ways when we trust him.
Sometimes all you need to do is focus on doing just one good thing, one thing right. Read a new verse, say an extra prayer, resist one ungodly impulse. Then once you have, do another. 🙂
Take a listen to this beautiful song by Josh Wilson, that reminds us to keep going.
